The Nation's debut ebook is Gore Vidal's State of the Union

VidalBookCover_515x425The Nation has announced the launch of eBookNation offering ebooks of the magazine's most notable contributors, and eBookNation's debut title is Gore Vidal's State of the Union, Nation Essays 1958-2005.

The essays collected here all appeared in The Nation magazine between 1958 and 2005. The early literary ones reflected Vidal's status as a rising young novelist of the postwar generation, and as he expanded confidently into nonfiction, his essays range widely over politics, religion, society, manners and morals. We see him emerge as the pre-eminent essayist of his generation, winning a 1993 Nation Book Award for a collection of nonfiction works.

Gore Vidal's State of the Union includes some of his great Nation essays: "Some Jews and the Gays," "Requiem for the American Empire," "Monotheism and Its Discontents," "Notes on Our Patriarchal State," "Birds and the Bees" and "The Birds and the Bees and Clinton."

US Congressman Steve Cohen Honors Gore Vidal with Statement for the Congressional Record

On August 2, 2012, US Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) introduced a Statement for the Congressional Record honoring the life and accomplishments of Gore Vidal. The statement Congressman Cohen made is seen below.

"Mr. Speaker, I rise today to highlight and remember the life of Gore Vidal, a celebrated American literary and cultural icon, who passed away this week at the age of 86. A writer famed for his acerbic wit, elegant style, tough-minded radical views and versatile talent, Vidal’s incredibly varied career boasted over 20 novels, in addition to memoirs, essays, plays, television dramas, and screenplays.

Vidal was impressively characterized by the inimitable and revered Christopher Hitchens as being a 20th century answer to Oscar Wilde, a tribute to Vidal’s cleverness and eloquence. As British author Martin Amis said in praising Vidal, 'he is learned, funny and exceptionally clear-sighted. Even his blind spots are illuminating.'

In 2009, Vidal won the annual Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation. Unlike many of his intellectual contemporaries, however, he saw his role as a public intellectual not as a sidelined observer, but rather as an active participant in democracy and public affairs, contributing frequently and prolifically to the American political debate.

This weekend, I will travel to New York to see a revival of his play 'The Best Man,' starring my fellow Memphian, Cybill Shephard. I ask everyone to join me honoring Gore Vidal for his many contributions. His was a life well-lived."

October 3, 1925 – July 31, 2012

Writer and provocateur of America's mid-century political and literary circles, Gore Vidal was raised in a prominent Washington D.C. Democratic family but describes himself as a conservative. He was the son of airline pioneer Eugene Vidal, grandson of Oklahoma Sen. T. P. Gore, stepbrother of Jackie Kennedy, and friend of writers and actors including Tennessee Williams, Anaïs Nin, Christopher Isherwood, Tim Robbins, and Paul Newman. A man of contradictions, he has been described as controversial, playful, acerbic, arrogant, and warm; as a gadfly, a conspiracy junkie, a paleo-isolationist, an America-hater, and a patriot; but also "the master essayist of our age" by the Washington Post and America's "greatest living man of letters" by The Boston Globe. He explored history, religion, sex, politics, and power in 25 novels--including his "Narratives of Empire" series about American history--several plays, movie scripts, and more than 200 essays.
